Paper or digital stamp cards: which one for your business?
Paper stamp cards are cheap and everyone understands them. Digital cards cost a little more but solve the problems paper never could. An honest look at both.

What paper does well
A paper card costs a few cents, needs no setup and every customer knows how it works. For a business that is just starting, or whose customers rarely use smartphones, it is a reasonable first step.
Cards get lost and forgotten
A paper card lives in a wallet, a coat pocket or a drawer. When the customer doesn't have it on them, the stamp goes on a new card, and neither card ever reaches the reward. A card that never reaches the reward doesn't bring anyone back.
A digital card lives on the phone, in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, next to boarding passes and tickets. People always have their phone with them.
Stamps are easy to copy
A rubber stamp from a stationery shop looks a lot like yours. Most customers would never fake one, but a card that can be faked invites a few to try. With a digital card only your team can add a stamp, from their own phones, and every stamp is recorded with its time.
Paper tells you nothing
With paper you don't know how many cards are out there, who your regulars are or who stopped coming. You find out a customer left when you realise you haven't seen them in months.
A digital card records every visit. You see how many people joined, how often they come and who has been away for a while, and you can export the list whenever you like.
You can't talk to a paper card
Once a paper card is in the customer's wallet, it stays silent. A digital card can show a message on the lock screen: today's offer, new opening hours, a reminder to someone who hasn't been in for a month.
What digital costs
Digital cards cost more than paper. Most services charge a monthly fee, and someone has to set the card up. Customers need a smartphone: almost everyone has one, but not everyone.
The real question is whether the regulars it keeps pay for it. If a few extra visits a month cover the fee, it does.
Switching from paper
You don't have to drop paper overnight. Offer the digital card to everyone who comes in with a paper one and add their stamps to it by hand. After a few weeks, paper fades out on its own.
